How To Change Your AirPods Name to Something More Unique - Directly Your iPhone or Android

AirPods are starting to appear everywhere, and as more people have them, it will be fun to make your own a little more personal. One way you can do this is by giving your AirPod a unique name, something a little more fun than “John’s” or “Jane’s AirPods.” With just a few taps, you can change the AirPod name directly from your iPhone or Android phone.

Changing the name of AirPods or AirPods Pro You only need a short trip to the Settings application on iOS or Android. We will discuss both ways below.

Method 1 Change Your AirPods’ Name on iOS

We will assume you are running iOS 13 or newer, which is a good idea to use your AirPod to their full potential. Open the Settings application, then tap “Bluetooth” to access the Bluetooth options, where you will find your AirPods adjustment preferences. Or, you can:

  • Long press the “Bluetooth” icon in the expanded connection control in the Control Center, then tap “Bluetooth settings.”
  • Ask Siri to “Open Bluetooth settings.”
  • Type “Bluetooth” in the pull-down search on the home screen, then tap “Bluetooth” under the Settings result.

No matter how you get there, tap the information icon (i) next to your AirPods in the list of Bluetooth devices. Your AirPods must be connected to your iPhone for customization settings to appear. So if you see “Forget This Device,” make sure to connect to AirPod when they come out of their case. Either that or save it in a case but open the lid so you can connect.

To change the name of your AirPods or AirPods Pro, tap the “Name” field at the top of the screen. You can delete old titles by tapping (x) to the right of the current name. Next, type the name you want, then press the blue “finish” button on the keyboard to save. If you change your mind, press the “Back” button at the top left to cancel.

And there he is! Now, when you see AirPods or AirPods Pro on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, you will have a special name that you prepared. This name will also appear on Android devices and non-Apple computers the first time you install AirPod, but if it has been paired and saved as another name, that name might be retained. But you can change the name ‘Pods on your Android to whatever you want.

Method 2 Change Your AirPods’ Name on Android

We will assume you are running Android 10 or newer and have AirPods or AirPods Pro installed. Also, we only show instructions on the Android stock below, so if you have a Samsung Galaxy, LG, or other brand, the process might be a little different.

Open the Settings application, then tap “Connected device” to access the Bluetooth options, where you will find your AirPod adjustment preferences. Or, you can:

  • Long press the “Bluetooth” icon in the Quick Settings pull-down.
  • Ask OK Google, Hey Google, or Google Assistant to “Open Bluetooth settings.”

1

Now, under Available Media Devices or Previously Connected Devices, tap the gear to the right of your AirPods or AirPods Pro name. Unlike iOS, you don’t need to be connected to headphones to change the name. Now, tap the pencil icon at the top of the details page, change the name to whatever you want, and press “Rename” to save it. You can also choose “Cancel” if you change your mind.

2

Now, when you see AirPods or AirPods Pro on that Android device, you will see a special name. This can be different from the name you chose on iOS, if applicable, but if you ever decide to pair AirPod with an Android phone, whatever name iOS has for AirPods (or AirPods names) is what will appear when paired.

Changing the name of your AirPods on an Android device will not change the name on your iPhone or other Apple devices, nor will you change the name on another Android device or computer. The default name can only be customized on iOS, and on Android, you can customize it on a device-by-device basis.
